This module enables students to develop and enhance the practical professional skills which are fundamental to their success as learners and to the requirements of the workplace. The focus is strongly practical.

Students will develop skills through concrete experience of working in teams, researching, delivering and assessing presentations and documentation, problem solving and reviewing performance.

In the module, students are introduced to the concept of 'the professional' and the associated codes of practice. The implications for their practice in a range of contexts involving legal, ethical and professional issues are also covered.

Throughout the module students will be educated in (and motivated to apply) the skills, competences, self-discipline and professional ethos required of autonomous learners.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to

• Create and deliver an effective oral presentation (using appropriate presentation software).
• Create and layout professional documentation (using appropriate word processing software).
• Operate effectively as a member of a team in a number of different roles.
• Apply strategies for effective retrieval, selection and analysis of information from a range of sources including electronic media and the Internet.
• Use a range of critical thinking skills for effective problem solving.

Student achievement will be measured by In-Course Assessment, which will comprise

• The delivery of an oral presentation
• The production of a formal report or a piece of creative narrative or journalistic writing
